Jerry Pate's first win as a pro was a big one: this U.S. Open. He earned it by coming from two strokes off the lead entering the final round. John Mahaffey was the second- and third-round leader, but Mahaffey shot 73 in the final round while Pate carded a 68 to surge to the title.
